What to Do If You Have a Power Cut in a Rented Property in Fife

Power cuts can be worrying, especially if you are unsure whether the issue is inside your home or affecting the wider area.

At Fife Private Rental Solutions, we regularly hear from tenants who are unsure what to check first. In many cases, the issue can be identified quickly with a few simple steps.

Knowing what to look for early can reduce stress and help avoid delays between tenants and landlords.

1. Check if the issue is only in your home

Look outside to see if street lights are on or whether neighbours still have electricity.

If others still have power, the issue is likely within your property.

2. Check your fuse box

Locate your fuse box (consumer unit).

If a switch has tripped:

  • Turn off appliances
  • Reset the switch

If it continues to trip, you should contact a qualified electrician.

3. Check your meter (Pay As You Go)

If you use a Pay As You Go meter, make sure you have enough credit.

Running out of credit can stop your electricity supply.

4. Confirm if it is a local power cut

You can report or check a power cut by calling 105.

This is a free UK-wide service that connects you to your local electricity network operator.

You can also check updates through
Energy Networks Association

5. Stay safe during a power cut

  • Use torches instead of candles where possible
  • Avoid using outdoor heating or cooking equipment indoors
  • Keep warm safely

6. Protect food

Keep fridge and freezer doors closed to help maintain temperature for longer.

7. If you rely on electrical equipment

Check whether equipment has a backup battery and how long it lasts.

If you have additional needs, you may benefit from joining the Priority Services Register.

8. If you are renting your home

If the issue is within the property and cannot be resolved safely, contact your landlord or letting agent.

Clear and early communication can help resolve the situation faster.

If you are unsure what to do, you can find more guidance on our tenant support in Fife page.

If a situation becomes difficult to manage, early advice can help prevent it from escalating.
