Extra Help for Winter

As winter approaches, it’s crucial to stay informed about available support options. Although certain cost-of-living initiatives and the Energy Price Guarantee concluded last year, there are still assistance programs available for those facing financial challenges this season.

Low-income households may benefit from the Household Support Fund, which helps cover essential costs. Those over the State Pension age who receive qualifying benefits might be eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, ranging from £200 to £300, which will be paid automatically in November and December. However, new claimants may need to apply directly to receive this benefit.

For specific details, please contact your local council, as they may have additional energy schemes based on location.

Updates to Winter Fuel Payment Eligibility

Starting in winter 2024/25, significant changes will affect the Winter Fuel Payment program across the UK. This benefit is now means-tested, limiting eligibility to those on certain state benefits, like Pension Credit or Universal Credit. This change aims to direct aid to those most in need, yet it may leave some pensioners without this vital support. Importantly, people in Scotland will continue to receive similar payments under UK Government guidelines until the Scottish Pension Age Winter Heating Payment is introduced in 2025.

Universal Credit Migration Notices

As part of the transition to Universal Credit (UC), the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is sending out migration notices to those receiving legacy benefits. If you receive one, it’s important to take action within three months. Missing the deadline could lead to the loss of “transitional protection,” a financial cushion that prevents any sudden loss in benefit income.

We recommend using tools like the Turn2us Benefits Calculator to ensure you’re receiving all entitled support. UC is replacing several benefits, including Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, and Housing Benefit. Keep in mind that accurate documentation and timely claims are key to a smooth transition.

For any questions or to discuss these updates, please reach out to our team. We're here to help ensure you receive the support you're entitled to during these challenging times.
